Posted by AndrewT on 4th Apr 2012

Since 25 March 2012 a number of transport operators have experienced a problem with their digital driver cards giving the following error message. “ERROR CODE 48” “CARD ERROR” “CARD NOT VALID” “CARD EXPIRED” This is due to a fault on the driver card and DVLA have issued the following advice to drivers: If your card is faulty you will need to return it with a completed application form D777B to DVLA who will issue a new card. You will need to apply within seven calendar days for a replacement. Application forms are downloadable from the Business Link website, or available from DVLA, DVLA Local Offices and VOSA Testing Stations.  Where possible try the card in a different vehicle unit (VU) to verify that the card is faulty. If you do not return the faulty card, the DVLA will have to treat the card as lost or stolen and charge the relevant fee.  Please be aware you can drive without the lost, stolen or damaged card for a maximum of 15 calendar days. You can drive for longer in order for the vehicle to return to its premises provided you produce two printouts - one for the beginning of the journey and one for the end. Please mark on the envelope code 48 (these will receive priority). Replacement cards should arrive within 5-7 days until then drivers are advised to take manual printouts from the Tachograph Head and ensure they have a sufficient supply of print rolls; see our online shop. For further information please call the Digital Tachograph Enquiry Line 0300 790 6109 and press option 1.
